The primary duties of the Stormwater Research Engineer include working under the direction of a Principal Stormwater Research Engineer on research and monitoring projects. Depending on the applicant’s qualifications, work duties may also support our other design, planning, and compliance practices. The Stormwater Research Engineer is expected to work independently as well as plan, organize, and assist other staff, including mentoring junior staff.
Essential Duties and Primary Responsibilities
- Be a self-starter and driven to solve problems.
- Have good writing, presentation, and speaking skills, as the position may involve presenting at public events.
- Conduct literature searches and develop experimental designs.
- Prepare quality assurance project plans and technical evaluation reports.
- Conduct site visits and inspections, collect field and laboratory data, and provide statistical analysis.
- Install and maintain monitoring equipment.
- Participate in quality control and audit reviews of research and monitoring projects.
- Develop and conduct hydraulics and hydrology models for conveyance systems and stormwater facilities.
- Prepare designs, including drawings, cost estimates, and specifications.
- Assist with project management duties, including developing and managing project schedules and budgets.
- Mentor and delegate to junior staff.
- Coordinate with clients and teaming partners.
- Actively participate in the development of proposals and grant applications.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience working on stormwater or water resource research projects
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or environmental engineering
- Professional Engineer License (PE) in Washington State or the ability to obtain a license in Washington State within six months of being hired
- Experience creating, updating, and reviewing hydraulic and hydrologic models
- Washington State or North Idaho resident or the ability to become a resident within one year of being hired
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in civil or environmental engineering
- Experience developing quality assurance project plans and following Technology Assessment Protocol – Ecology (TAPE)
- Experience with Washington State Phase I and Phase II NPDES MS4 Permits, Washington State Department of Ecology stormwater design manuals, and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Design Manuals, including the Highway Runoff Manual (HRM) and Hydraulics Manual (HM)
- Experience with statistical software (Minitab, R, etc.), AutoCAD, ArcGIS or QGIS, SWMM, MGSFlood, and WWHM
- Ability to work on a team and independently in a remote setting on multiple projects
- Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills
- Positive attitude and passion for stormwater management
